Coastal Oregon Living.

This home truly puts you in the heart of first beach town you hit as you cross the southern Oregon border. Living in Brookings, Oregon feels like being tucked into one of the most scenic corners of the Pacific Northwest, where the ocean and forest almost collide. It’s a small coastal town on the southern Oregon coast, known for its mild “Banana Belt” climate that’s warmer and sunnier than much of the surrounding region, which makes outdoor life unusually comfortable year-round. Days tend to revolve around the rugged coastline, the nearby beaches, and the lush forests of the Klamath-Siskiyou region, with the Chetco River adding clear-water swimming holes and fishing spots just minutes from town.

Life moves at a slower pace here—there are more local shops than big chains, more community familiarity than anonymity—and it’s the kind of place where people often plan their week around tides, weather windows, and seasonal changes rather than strict schedules. It’s peaceful and naturally beautiful, but also remote enough that larger-city amenities require a drive, which is part of the tradeoff for the quiet, scenic lifestyle.

Explore Brookings, Oregon

A Fun Little Town

No matter the season, Brookings is a fun little town to live in and to visit.

Brookings is a city in Curry County, Oregon, United States. It was named after John E. Brookings, president of the Brookings Lumber & Box Company, who founded the city in 1908. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,744. Brookings is located along the southern Oregon coast at the mouth of the Chetco River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.94 square miles (10.20 km2), of which 3.87 square miles (10.02 km2) is land and 0.07 square miles (0.18 km2) is water.[15]

Climate

Brookings is located along the Wild Rivers Coast and boasts some of the warmest temperatures on the coastline.

Brookings has a mild Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification: Csb).[17] According to the Trewartha climate classification, Brookings has a subtropical climate (Cs) since eight months are above 50 °F (10 °C).

A weather phenomenon known as the "Chetco Effect" or the "Brookings Effect" can cause the temperature in Brookings near the Chetco River mouth to be much higher than the surrounding area. Adiabatic heating increases the temperature and reduces relative humidity as katabatic wind, driven by high pressure on the Great Basin, descend across the west slopes of the Cascade Range and Oregon Coast Range.[18]

The heart of Brookings, with its orientation, is protected from sea with breezes coming from the northwest and the warm, dry, down-sloping winds that are funneled down the Coastal Range into the deep Chetco River gorge can reach the coast uninfluenced by the effects of the Pacific.[18][19] This can result in large temperature gradients; when Brookings recorded its all-time record high on July 8, 2008 of 108 °F (42 °C), Crescent City, around 30 miles (48 km) south of Brookings, recorded a high temperature of just 68 °F (20 °C).[18]

Brookings is beautiful all year long. Sometimes it’s even warmer in Brookings than it is in Medford — which could be connected to its location in Oregon’s famed “Banana Belt.” Rain or shine, there is always something for the family to do in Brookings.

Kid Friendly Things To Do

Festivals

There’s no shortage of fun festivals(opens in a new tab) in Brookings throughout the year.

Come for music, crab races and the chowder cook-off at Port of Brookings Harbor Crab Festival in January; a street fair, kids carnival and parade at Azalea Festival in May; the brilliant airborne displays at Southern Oregon Kite Festival in July;

reenactments and vendors at the Pirates of the Pacific Festival in August;

a fishing competition at Slam’n Salmon Derby in September;

Nature’s Coastal Holiday in December; and more.

Harris Beach State Park

Harris Beach State Park is located on Highway 101 at the north end of Brookings. It includes 173 acres of coastal access as well as RV and tent camping facilities and a rest area. It is an amazing spot to view the sunsets. Technically you don’t even have to get out of your car since you can see the horizon right from the parking lot. Along with the beautiful, clean beach you can explore the tide pools where you can see crabs, sea anemones and lots of other sea creatures. There are two areas to view sea life: on the south side of the parking lot, before you go down the hill there is a trail that takes you down into the first tide pool; the second area is located on the north side of the parking lot where there is a trail to take you to the other side of the beach. You just walk over the waterway coming out of the side of the bluff and out to the rocky intertidal to the Harris Beach Marine Garden. And then of course there is the obligatory sand castle building and playing in the water. Remember to always practice beach safety (opens in a new tab) at the Oregon Coast and never turn your back to the ocean. .

Secret Beach

The 12-mile Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor(opens in a new tab) is a gem of the South Coast, particularly the secluded cove called Secret Beach. There are two ways to get to Secret Beach. The shorter trail starts at a small parking spot on the side of the highway at the end of the guardrail north of the Natural Bridges viewpoint; take the right of two trails for a short hike down to the beach. Alternatively, you can hike from the Thunder Cove Trail(opens in a new tab). Plan to go at low tide and you can reach all three beaches, plus waterfalls, sea stacks and just stunning views.

Azalea Park

Azalea Park is located at Old Country Road.  It has picnic area, bandshell, snack shack, gazebo, Midtown playground, disc golf course, softball and soccer fields, and the Capella by the Sea.  Several cultural events in the town are held at Azalea Park. Known as the crown jewel Brookings’ city parks, Azalea Park(opens in a new tab) features gorgeous gardens, athletic fields, a disc golf course, horseshoe pits and so much more. The kids love the playground, much like the structure at Bear Creek Park in Medford. During the spring the flowers are in full bloom, culminating in the annual Azalea Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, which includes a parade, car show, live music and lots of fun events on the Port of Brookings marina.

In the summer more live music can be found during the American Music Festival(opens in a new tab) (AMF) summer concert series every other Sunday in Azalea Park. The holiday season is a great time to visit too, with Nature’s Coastal Holiday Festival of Lights  Holiday(opens in a new tab) hosting a beautiful walk-through light display run by volunteers in the community.

The Port of Brookings marina has cute storefronts and a coffee shop where you can easily wile away the day. On the weekend they have Saturday Market at the Port(opens in a new tab) with live music and local artists and vendors, every Saturday from the last weekend of May to the second weekend of October; it’s always one of our favorite things to do.

Coastal Wonders between Gold Beach and Brookings

It only takes about 30 minutes to drive between Gold Beach and Brookings, but this stretch of coastline deserves a day of its own, or better yet, a week to get off the road, down... MORE

Bird Watching:

Just offshore from Harris Beach is Goat Island, also known as Bird Island, a nod to the massive seabird population it supports. It’s actually the largest island along the Oregon Coast and is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, as are many of the smaller rocks along this stretch of beach. It’s estimated that more than 100,000 seabirds nest on Goat Island, representing 11 species, including nearly a quarter of the state’s population of Leach’s Storm Petrels. Tufted Puffins are also among the seabirds that can be spotted here. While even casual beach goers can enjoy wildlife encounters, a pair of binoculars will give you an eye-opening glimpse of this remarkable natural area, while serious bird watchers tote spotting scopes in hopes of sighting species to check off their list.

Walking and Hiking

Scenic walking paths, sensational viewpoints and spectacular hiking trails are easily accessed at Harris Beach and just minutes from the park. For casual strolls, the Park’s Sunset Point Trail follows much of this scenic coastline, connecting viewpoint overlooks, the South Beach Trail and a walking/biking trail that leads 1.2 miles to downtown Brookings.  A rocky peninsula just over two miles to the south of Harris Beach comprises Chetco Point Park that features easy trails, great views and access to beach and intertidal areas. Look for seals and birdlife among the numerous rocky outcroppings. More serious hikers should not miss the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor that lies just north of Harris Beach. This 12-mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail is one of the most scenic in the state. You can hike the entire 12-mile stretch or pick a portion of the trail from several of the viewpoint stops. Whaleshead Beach to the Thomas Creek Bridge is a moderate three-mile hike (six miles out and back) that rewards hikers with scenic views and a variety of landscapes including the intriguing Indian Sands. Boardman Corridor stops such as Natural Bridges, Thunder Rock Cove and the Arch Rock Viewpoint offer impressive views just steps or short walks from parking areas. Hikers can traverse a strikingly fragrant Myrtle grove, then connect to a one-mile loop trail to explore Oregon’s largest stand of Redwoods in Loeb State Park, a 20-minute drive from Harris Beach up the north side of the Chetco River. Myrtle trees, some over 200 years old, shade the three-quarter-mile Riverview Trail. It’s a full sensory experience as aromas reminiscent of eucalyptus and camphor wood fill the air as you walk along the Chetco River.

Whale Watching

While grey whales can be seen along the Oregon Coast all year long, there are two official Whale Watch Weeks in winter and spring. During the weeks, you can talk to ‘Whale Spoken Here’ volunteers at 24 designated locations and learn how to spot the sea creatures from far away. The weeks correlate to the migration patterns, taking place the last week of December and the last week in March. Harris Beach State Park and Cape Ferrelo are the official Whale Watch Week locations near Brookings; both are great spots to look for gray whales year-round.

For more details, visit Oregon State Parks(opens in a new tab).

Paddle Trips

Watery adventures await paddlers who can uniquely explore this ravishingly diverse and dazzlingly scenic stretch of the South Oregon Coast. Even beginning paddlers can experience these unique seascapes and natural areas by participating in an expedition guided by South Coast Tours, a paddle tour company. In two-hour or four-hour tours, you can paddle the seacoast of Brookings and Chetco Point. More experienced paddlers can join longer tours of the captivating arches and coves of the Samuel H. Boardman Corridor. Kayak fishing tours, overnight expeditions and paddleboard tours are also offered.

Jet Boat Cruise

If you haven’t experienced a jet boat cruise, then you need to take an excursion on Jerry’s Rogue Jets(opens in a new tab). You get a huge adrenaline rush, taking a high-speed jet boat up the Rogue National Wild and Scenic River.

Jerry’s is the only commercial jet boat trip operating along the designated Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River, with tours featuring nature education, historical context and adventure.

Choose from 64-, 80-, and 104-mile round-trip tours. Fun fact: Jerry’s Rogue Jets also act as mail boats for the riverside town of Agness, and you can witness the deliveries on a special Historic Mail Route tour. It is a lot of fun and a memory you all won’t forget.
